… born to be ‘blessed’ … or the ‘other Jesus’ …

… my friend from Columbia heard that ‘Food not Bombs’ was doing a vegetarian meal at the Monroe Park.  Monroe Park is a park on the west side of downtown Richmond, VA., surrounded by the buildings of VCU.

… the weekends are busy in the park feeding and clothing the homeless of our city.  it is my understanding that the city has sold the rights to the park to a corporation, and the feedings must stop in the fall.

IMG_0279… i got into a conversation with one of the ladies who were feeding at one of the tables in the park.  we were discussing the homeless situation in general, and Richmond specifically.

… i mentioned the fact that 85 people own half of everything own-able in the world.

… this ‘good christian woman’ proceeded to tell me that her god wants her to enjoy all the good things in the earth and be ‘prosperous’, and for some that includes Mercedes Benzes and jet airplanes ..

… i reminded her that the Jesus of the Bible died naked on a tree with no possessions to leave behind.  He borrowed a donkey to ride into Jerusalem because He did not own a donkey.  He borrowed an ‘upper room’.

“… they divided his clothes … “

When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes among the four of them. They also took his robe, but it was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. So they said, “Rather than tearing it apart, let’s throw dice for it.” This fulfilled the Scripture that says, “They divided my garments among themselves and threw dice for my clothing.” So that is what they did.” (John 19:23–24, NLT)

“…untie them and bring them to me … “

Go into the village over there,” he said. “As soon as you enter it, you will see a donkey tied there, with its colt beside it. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone asks what you are doing, just say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will immediately let you take them.” This took place to fulfill the prophecy that said, “Tell the people of Jerusalem, ‘Look, your King is coming to you. He is humble, riding on a donkey— riding on a donkey’s colt.’ ”” (Matthew 21:2–5, NLT)

“… where is the guest room where I can eat …”

He replied, “As soon as you enter Jerusalem, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him. At the house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ He will take you upstairs to a large room that is already set up. That is where you should prepare our meal.”” (Luke 22:10–12, NLT)

… then she told me that ‘even Jesus said that the poor would always be with you.’

You will always have the poor among you, and you can help them whenever you want to. But you will not always have me.” (Mark 14:7, NLT)

… i asked her if she knew the rest of the passage that Jesus had started to recite.  she said ‘no’, so i told her :

For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.’” (Deuteronomy 15:11, NKJV)

… i explained to her that 15,000 children die daily of starvation on this planet.

… she insisted that it ‘wasn’t her problem‘ …..

whose problem is it?

… whose problem are the 156 orphans, scores of widows and AIDS victims are going hungry?

Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’ “Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (Matthew 25:41–46, NKJV)

or34… what about the hundreds of thousands of slaves in the world?

work… if it’s not the problem of the ‘people who claim to know the God Who is Love’, who follow the ‘Prince of Peace’, the homeless man from Nazareth … then …

whose problem is it ?

But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it!” (2 Corinthians 11:3–4, NKJV)
