.. is America the new Sodom?

.. because that is what violently; morally worthless, wicked, evil, vicious, degenerate and, sinful men do. they rape, pillage and steal – take what they want from whomever they want, they fear no man or God and they don’t feel they have to answer to anyone.

Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot—they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all— so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed.

Luke 17:28–30

… let’s start with some basics about language. the first thing we MUST realize, is that language changes over time. words change over time. i am just over a half a century old and many common uses of words have changed over my lifetime. words are added. words fall out of use. do you think Henry Ford knew what google means?

…for instance, what does “bad” mean today?

… if i say to you, “that peach is bad,” what information have i just conveyed to you? did i tell you that it is soft and rotten? or am i telling you that it is one of the best tasting peaches i have ever had in my life?

… if i ask you, “who is a sodomite?”, you would probably answer, “a homosexual.”

… if i ask you, “who is an israelite?”, you would probably answer, “someone from Israel.”

… now, if i ask you again, “who is a sodomite?”, you might dare to answer, “someone from Sodom”, and now we know what the word actually means as it is used in Genesis 19:4 where it says;

But before they went to sleep, the men of the city, the Sodomites, compassed the house, both young and old, all the people together.

Genesis 19:4

… so, how did we get from “the men of the city of Sodom” to “homosexuals”?

.. in order to answer that question, we have to go back in history to somewhere around 1911 BC/BCE where archeologists say there is evidence that several kings invaded the town of Sodom. they believe Sodom was destroyed 11 yrs later. just think about that – that’s almost 4,000 yrs ago.

… in the book of Genesis, which they believe was written around 1446 BC/BCE, some 465 yrs after the invasion of Sodom, we are told that when Abraham left his father, his nephew Lot went with him. when they both had gained large herds of animals, the split up so that their herdsmen would not fight. Abraham allows Lot to choose which way he wants to go. he goes towards the town of Sodom. and we are told;

And Lot dwelt in a city of the neighbouring people, and pitched his tent in Sodom. But the men of Sodom were evil, and exceedingly sinful before God.

Genesis 13:12–13

.. the men of Sodom were evil, and exceedingly sinful ..

… in the Greek text of the LXX it says, “οἱ δὲ ἄνθρωποι οἱ ἐν Σοδομοις πονηροὶ καὶ ἁμαρτωλοὶ ἐναντίον τοῦ θεοῦ σφόδρα.” Genesis 13:13 .. the word σφόδρα (sphodra) is an adverb, which means a very high point on a scale of extent, very (much), extremely, greatly (in many contexts with reference to vehemence or violence), which modifies the words πονηροὶ (poneroy) and ἁμαρτωλοὶ (hamartoloy), which are both adjectives. πονηροὶ (poneroy) means pertaining to being morally or socially worthless, wicked, evil, bad, base, worthless, vicious, degenerate, wicked or evil-intentioned person, evildoer and ἁμαρτωλοὶ (hamartoloy) means pertaining to behavior or activity that does not measure up to standard moral or cultic expectations, sinful.

… this is what we learn about Sodom, the first time we really learn anything about Sodom in the Bible. the men are basically called ‘violently; morally worthless, wicked, evil, vicious, degenerate and, sinful.’

… do you get the picture? these are people that the God of the Bible absolutely does NOT approve of and it has NOTHING to do with homosexuality.

.. the next time we hear of Sodom, a bunch of kings in the area went to war. the king of Sodom and the other kings in his alliance got beat and when they ran off, as they say, ‘to the victor goes the spoils’, so the winner, the king of Elam, took all their possessions, including women, children, slaves, civilians, including Abraham’s nephew Lot and all of his stuff.

So the enemy took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way.

Genesis 14:11

.. when Abraham heard about it, he got mad and he took an army out to fight the king of Elam, and then he took the stuff back. on his way to take the king of Sodom and allies their stuff, he gets stopped by the king of Salem, Melchizedek, a “priest of God most high,” who blesses Abraham. in response, Abraham gives 10% of his spoils to Melchizedek and they celebrate a covenant meal of bread and wine (the first communion?)

.. then, in the 18th Chapter of Genesis, we read a story about 3 men that appear in front of Abraham. Abraham goes above and beyond to show these 3 strangers hospitality. he practically begs them to stay and have a rest and some food. we are told that Abraham actually goes out and kills a calf and has someone cook it up.

.. just think about that for a minute. if you have ever done any cooking, you know that the preparation described in the Bible must have taken at least a couple of hours. imagine meeting someone who stops you asking for directions and you inviting them in for a home cooked pot roast with all the trimings. fresh bread, roast veggies – you get the picture. that is pretty much what happened, but with 3 people – strangers, foreigners, immigrants, refugees -who were passing through.

.. after the meal they got up and asked for directions to Sodom. then we read an interesting passage.

The Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.”

Genesis 18:17–19

.. so then we find out why the 3 men were going to Sodom.

God continued, “The cries of the victims in Sodom and Gomorrah are deafening; the sin of those cities is immense. I’m going down to see for myself, see if what they’re doing is as bad as it sounds. Then I’ll know.”

Genesis 18:20–21

.. notice “the cries of the victims in Sodom.” what are they victims of? they are victims of the violently; morally worthless, wicked, evil, vicious, degenerate and, sinful men of Sodom, the Sodomites. there are victims. these are crimes against humanity. the kind of people who would take a child from a strangers, foreigners, immigrants, refugees – when they come looking for help, and then arresting the parents and little children an put them into cages. you know, sodomites …

.. then Abraham barters with God over destroying Sodom, ‘if there are 50 righteous, just, honest and true people in Sodom, would you still destroy it? how about 45, 40,30,20,10? we are told the LORD agrees and promises not to destroy Sodom if He can find 10 righteous people in the city.

.. so we then learn that 2 angels are sent to Sodom to see if they can find “10 righteous, just, honest and true” people in the whole city. Lot is hanging out by the city gate when they come to town in the evening and begs them to come and spend the night in his house. they said that they were going to spend the night in town, and Lot begs harder to please stay under the safety of his roof for the evening. so later that night, when the men of Sodom, the Sodomites heard that Lot had visitors – strangers, foreigners, immigrants, refugees – staying with him, the men of Sodom banged on the Lot’s door, telling him, an outsider, to send out the men so they could rape them.

.. as anyone who has ever been to prison will tell you, rape has nothing to do with sexual desire – it is an act of evil violence against another human. it is a way of exerting power and acting powerful in a violent way- meant to emasculate and demean and do extreme harm to another human being.

.. to protect the men that Lot has promised safety under his roof, to keep his word to the strangers, foreigners, immigrants, refugees, Lot offers his two virgin daughters to the men, but “sex” was not what they really wanted – they just were violently; morally worthless, wicked, evil, vicious, degenerate and, sinful men.

.. the men of Sodom, the Sodomites, were so mad at Lot, they were going to take him in the street and beat him up, because that is what violently; morally worthless, wicked, evil, vicious, degenerate and, sinful men do. they rape, pillage and steal – take what they want from whomever they want, they fear no man or God and they don’t feel they have to answer to anyone.

.. when the 2 angels saved him and then told him this;

Meanwhile, the angels questioned Lot. “Do you have any other relatives here in the city?” they asked. “Get them out of this place—your sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone else. For we are about to destroy this city completely. The outcry against this place is so great it has reached the Lord, and he has sent us to destroy it.”

Genesis 19:12–13

.. and then, a few verses later we read,

Then the Lord made burning sulfur and fire rain out of heaven on Sodom and Gomorrah. He destroyed those cities, the whole plain, all who lived in the cities, and whatever grew on the ground.

Genesis 19:24–25

.. the word Sodom is used 48 times in the Bible. 9 times in the New Testament, the other 39 times in the Old Testament, and every verse after the destruction of Sodom, around the year 1900 BC/BCE, refers to either the violently; morally worthless, wicked, evil, vicious, degenerate and, sinful men of Sodom, the sodomites; or the destruction of the entire city because of the violently; morally worthless, wicked, evil, vicious, degenerate and, sinful men of Sodom, the sodomites.

… around the year 592 BC/BCE, more than 1,300 years after the destruction of Sodom, a prophet called Ezekiel is called to warn the ancient nation of Israel of the impending doom, saying that they are worse than Sodom. he then gives us more information on what Sodom had done wrong, the sins of Sodom that caused the LORD so much anger that He destroyed it.

This is what your sister Sodom has done wrong. She and her daughters were proud that they had plenty of food and had peace and security. They didn’t help the poor and the needy. They were arrogant and did disgusting things in front of me. So I did away with them when I saw this.

Ezekiel 16:49–50

… 5 of the 9 times Sodom is called out in the New Testament is by Jesus, the Man called Christ, around the year 30 CE/AD. He says things like;

“And you people of Capernaum,
will you be honored in heaven?
No, you will go down to the place of the dead.
For if the miracles I did for you had been done
in wicked Sodom, it would still be here today.
I tell you, even Sodom will be better off

on judgment day than you.”

Matthew 11:23–24, NLT

.. He is echoing the words of the Prophet Ezekiel in saying that they were worse than Sodom.

.. now we fast forward to the year 386 AD/CE to a man called Augustine. Augustine “converts” to Christianity when he was 32 yrs old. he was a “Christian Theologian” who became the bishop of Hippo Regius in North Africa. he is the guy who coined the phrase, “just war”. Jesus taught His followers to love their enemies and to bless them and pray for them, but by 386 AD/CE some in the “church” were saying we can kill “when authorized by a legitimate authority.”

.. Augustine believed that sex before the fall of Adam and Eve was a passionless affair but after the fall, and because of it, sexual passion enters in, and therefore intercourse even after marriage for the sole purpose of procreation, was basically evil.

.. and it was in book 16 of De ciuitate Dei (The City of God), composed in 420 CE/AD that Augustine states the reason he believes that God punished the citizens of Sodom; because of their sin, identified as “illicit sexual intercourse with men” (stupra in masculos).

.. this became a major shift in what a sodomite was. he completely changed the meaning of a word that had been used for around 2,330 years and conveys the acts of the violently; morally worthless, wicked, evil, vicious, degenerate and, sinful men of Sodom, the sodomites into “illicit sexual intercourse with men” because of one recorded attempted rape.

.. fast forward again to around the year 1259 CE/AD to a man called Thomas Aquinas, a “philosopher, theologian, and jurist in the tradition of scholasticism which dominated medieval academics. in his Summa Contra Gentiles Thomas Aquinas ranked sodomy as the worst crime second only to murder itself, because it essentially amounted to wanton destruction of a potential person.  as the only proper place for the male seed is the female womb, those who masturbate, engage in oral sex, and even those who use contraceptives are all sodomites.

.. and now, in 2019, there are many different interpretation of the word sodomite, none of which has anything to do with what the word meant for the first 2,300+ years. in the USA®, in some states, state law says that sodomy is any form of anal or oral sex – male/male, male/female, female/female, husband/wife – doesn’t matter, you are a sodomite under state sodomy laws. other state laws only apply to male/male relations

.. in the mean time, the people who make these laws completely ignore the scriptures they claim gives them the authority to make these laws. what about;

There shall be one law for the native and for the stranger who sojourns among you.”

Exodus 12:49

“Never mistreat a foreigner living in your land. Foreigners living among you will be like your own people. Love them as you love yourself, because you were foreigners living in Egypt. I am the Lord your God.

Leviticus 19:33–34

There is one law for the whole assembly: for you and foreigners who are living with you. It is a permanent law for future generations. As far as the Lord is concerned, you and foreigners are the same. The instructions and rules are the same for you as well as foreigners who are living with you.”

Numbers 15:15–16

“If your brother becomes poor and cannot maintain himself with you, you shall support him as though he were a stranger and a sojourner, and he shall live with you. Take no interest from him or profit, but fear your God, that your brother may live beside you. You shall not lend him your money at interest, nor give him your food for profit. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God.

Leviticus 25:35–38

.. and ..

For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’

Deuteronomy 15:11

… can you tell the difference between what the Bible says, and what a large number of people who claim to follow it believe?

… i am just over a half century old, and i never ever in a million years thought i would ever see and hear people who claim to represent the “church”, stand in support of the evil that sits in the highest office in this land, and the evil taking place on the border of this nation, the one they claim is “One Nation Under God.”

.. the man in the White House, THE representative of this country to the entire world, 22 different women have accused the man of sexual assault, including rape.

22

.. the man is an arrogant billionaire who is working tirelessly to make the lives of the poor and needy a living hell. isn’t he a perfect example of the king of Sodom, a sodomite through and through?

.. as i am writing this, the radio is telling the story of the 6th immigrant seeking asylum to die in the last 6 mths.

.. in the USA ® there are > 600 billionaires and 11,000,000 millionaires in a land with a median income of $60,336 a year, with only 39% of the population, > 127,600,000 people who cannot afford a $1,000 emergency and the king of Sodom wants to spend $70,000,000,000 to build a wall to keep the poor out ..

.. and quietly i read;

Then I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues; for her sins are heaped high as heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. Pay her back as she herself has paid back others, and repay her double for her deeds; mix a double portion for her in the cup she mixed. As she glorified herself and lived in luxury, so give her a like measure of torment and mourning, since in her heart she says, ‘I sit as a queen, I am no widow, and mourning I shall never see.’ For this reason her plagues will come in a single day, death and mourning and famine, and she will be burned up with fire; for mighty is the Lord God who has judged her.”

(Revelation 18:4–8, ESV)
